Chef Jamie Oliver and actress Joanna Lumley launch campaign to 'save our bacon'
Jamie Oliver, the chef, and Joanna Lumley, the actress, will launch a new television campaign this week to save pigs from being maltreated throughout the EU.
They want pig farmers to voluntarily abandon so-called "sow stalls" - which only allow female pigs to stand or flop in a tiny enclosed space - even though they will not be banned in most of the EU until 2013.
Bernard Hoggarth, of Simply Sausages, a premium brand which prides itself on its outdoor-reared pigs, said: "I think it will have more impact than anything achieved by industry representatives in recent years. In a celebrity-obsessed society, their views can have a real effect. We have worked with researchers on the Jamie Oliver programme and we welcome the message that it gets across on the need to treat pigs well - and to produce quality meats. It is wrong that different countries in the EU currently have different welfare standards for pigs."
* Jamie Saves Our Bacon, part of Channel 4's Great British Food Fight season, is on Thursday at 9pm.

Various Press Clippings...
Below are some press clippings that have featured in various publications over the past few months.
Food Spy - Tom Aikens - ES Magazine - 29.08.08
British Bangers...
Simply Sausages, Smithfield's most famous sausages, are at last available to supermarket shoppers. The company believed in proper food made with proper ingredients, so the sausages are made with 100 per cent British produce - British herbs in the season, leeks and onions from Yorkshire, and meat from pigs allowed to roam free and then tucked up at night in deep straw-bedded barns.
The sausage that started it all - and which tastes fantastic - is the Smithfield No.1, which contains 88 per cent fresh British pork, free-range British eggs, herbs, spices and breadcrumbs. The perfect way to cook sausages is to pan-fry them on a high heat (don't pierce them as you want to keep all the juice in the sausage) and then cook them for five to eight minutes in the oven. I eat them with masses of ketchup.
Food & Travel - 11.08
Simply Sausages (www.simplysausages.com) are made entirely from British pigs reared outdoors. We're taken with the apple and acacia honey variety
Hello - 11.11.08
Big Porkies...
Hello magazine ran an article on sausages and included a mention to Simply Sausages. They featured two recipes: Sausages with Olive Oil Mash and Onion Gravy and Toad In The Hole. These recipes are featured in our recipe section.
Dinner Tonight.... - 14.10.2008
The times featured a Meatballs recipe using Simply Sausages:
Nutmeg sausage meatballs
400g spaghetti.
1 red onion, approx. 100g.
2 tbsp olive oil.
400g chard or spinach.
480g Simply Sausage pork with nutmeg.
Boil the spaghetti in salted water according to the packet instructions until al dente. Drain and keep warm. meanwhile peel, halve and finely chop the onion. Heat the oil in the saute pan and gently soften the onion. Run a knife down the sausages, peel away the skin and make 5 balls from each sausage, rolling the sausage meat round in your hands. Drop the balls into the onions - they should all fit in a snug single layer - and cook, shaking the pan occasionally, until crusty and cooked through. If using chard, remove and chop stalks. Have ready a pan of boiling, salted water and cook the stalks for 3 min before adding the sliced leaves. Boil for 3-4 minute moire. Boil young leaf spinach for 2 min, Drain. Stir the chard into the spaghetti, add the meatballs, toss and serve.

Food & Travel - "Porky and Best" article
(August/September 2007 issue)
"We were big fans of the Simply Sausages shops in London started by chef and restaurateur Martin Heap in the Nineties, so were sad to see the original Farringdon branch close in April. The good news is that best-selling five flavours are available from major supermarkets. With 80 per cent premium pork from the shoulder and belly, they have natural casings and natural everything else. Start with the Smith No1 recipe - outdoor-reared pork with nutmeg, then try apple and acacia honey, or leek and air-dried ham (all 480g, £2.99). Home delivery is also available (020 7394 6406; heaptohome.co.uk)."

BBC Good Food - 'On Test sausages' article
(July 2007 issue)
"BEST MAIL ORDER
Simply Sausages London Rich Sausages: traditional pork £6.50/1kg
Meat content 79%
A very good plain pork sausage – chunky with an open texture and nicely seasoned. This might not be as powerful in favour as some we tried, but its hefty size makes it perfect for an extra special hot dog, especially when drizzled with mustard or honey."

THE BIG LAUNCH
We have relaunched some of our favourite sausages into the retail marketplace under our newly refurbished simply sausages branding. For those of you not lucky enough to be invited, the launch party took place at The Ivy restaurant in London, where guests were treated to a gourmet dinner including... you guessed it ...sausages. Not to mention the chance to meet guest of honour celebrity chef James Martin (pictured at the event right).
The launch into major retailers will see that some of the finest sausages in the country are at last available nationwide, after over a decade of being one of Londons best kept secrets.
